Nearly 55 years ago, Robert Mather, a young man in his senior year of high school, wondered what he was going to do for a career. Being a farm boy and working on his dad’s farm, he knew what hard work was all about.
An opportunity opened to help build garages for a Lake Beulah company. Robert worked weekends and then full-time after graduation. Later, a better-paying job offer in Racine was accepted, and he entered into a bricklayer’s apprentice program. This was just seasonal work, however, and he was eventually laid off. But all of this time, Robert was learning many aspects of the building trades.
At age 20, he started building his own home and soon other homes for relatives. He later worked for Burlington Roofing and learned that business as well.
In 1966 Robert started his own business with his brother. After 15 years in the home improvement business, they went their separate ways. With Robert having thirty years of experience in home improvement, and enjoying the work and the challenge, he decided to reestablish a new business.
A new history of home improvement began when Robert Mather bought a former garage at 30340 Durand Avenue, Burlington in 1981. After gutting the building and removing automotive equipment, it became the new location for Mather’s Improvement Service, Ltd.
In 1982, the second generation became involved when Robert’s daughter Christine and husband Mark Zusan joined the team. Mark worked and learned the business, while Christine was busy learning the office work. After many years of quality workmanship, Robert retired in 1991. The challenge of Mather’s Improvement Service, Ltd. was now in the hands of Mark and Christine Zusan.
Zusans’ concerns were to keep the business running as before and continue to satisfy the customers with their home improvement needs. With this in mind, the third generation, Matthew and Benjamin Zusan joined the team in 1994 and 1996 on the clean up crew. With both spending time around their grandfather and father they knew what hard work was all about. They have worked their way up from the clean up crew to foremen.
There was a need for change in 1998, when Mark and Christine bought an ABC Seamless Franchise. Mather’s Improvement Service, Ltd. has been offering Seamless Steel Siding since then. With the business growing, the building was getting to small for the company’s needs.
In June of 2000, Mark and Christine bought a building that before held Klodd’s Spraymaster. With many months of gutting, painting, scrapping, etc., Mather’s Improvement Service, Ltd. moved to their current location at 30735 Durand Avenue, Burlington.
The goals of Mather’s Improvement Service. Ltd. hasn’t changed in three generations and plan not to. Mather’s offer a complete line of products and have pride in doing the complete job. Their men are polite, courteous, fully insured and are always ready to meet the homeowner’s needs.
